Registration and Insurance for Personal Trainers in US
What personal trainers in the US need to know about registration, certification and insurance before taking on clients.

Before you take on paying clients in the US, it's worth knowing what's required and what clients and gyms expect. This guide covers the basics. Always confirm details with the official body, as rules change.
Registration
- The US has no federal licence for personal trainers. Employers usually look for a certification accredited by the NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies), such as those from NASM, ACE, ACSM or NSCA.
- Most certifications need a current CPR and AED certificate and continuing education to renew.
Insurance
- General and professional liability insurance are standard for independent trainers, and gyms often ask for proof.
- Some cities require a business licence or a permit for commercial fitness in public parks. Check your city and state.
